Help yourself before helping others

It’s easy for things in life to pull you in one direction – and then the next. People to tell you to do this or that.  My life started changing for the better when I focused on myself.  Not in a narcissistic way, but a way that I realized that I am my best advocate.  You will see amazing changes in your life, too, if you do what’s best for yourself, not everyone else.  I have always been a people pleaser. One that doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, one that wants to be friends with everyone, or one that puts everyone’s needs first.  Can you relate?

But – that all changed when a few people around me told me that I need to always do what’s best for me.  Since finding #workitout100, working out became my priority – and I have never felt better about my life.  Prioritizing your health is key.  Even if it’s just for 15-30 minutes.  We’re all busy, but setting aside that time for yourself will help in so many areas of your life.  If the kids are running around – turn on a movie or their favorite show, and do some high intensity training, bodyweight training, or a quick run/walk.  Something is better than nothing.

When you prioritize things that better you – you will start to see and feel a change.  Relationships that are important to me became stronger, I felt healthy & confident (of course, I am always striving for better though), and all in all – I was just happy.  Set goals for yourself. Decide on who you want to surround yourself with.  At the end of the day- ask yourself- did I do what I wanted to today? What do I want to do tomorrow?  Live in the present moment. Easier said than done, but by focusing on the present, you will find yourself worrying less.

A favorite analogy of mine is to focus on yourself first, before helping others – similar to an oxygen mask on the airplane.  It’s hard to give to others if you’re not taking care of yourself.   So, go out there, take care of yourself – and you will come a long way.  Each day is a gift & we must make the most of it.
